Here at RideWise BC we know that riding a motorcycle can offer an unmatched sense of freedom, especially with the province’s stunning coastal and mountain roads. But before you can hit the road, you’ll need to go through BC’s graduated licensing process. It doesn’t matter if you’re brand new to riding or transitioning from a standard driver’s license, RideWise BC can help you understand the steps to help you get licensed safely and efficiently.re

The Licensing System in BC

Motorcycle licensing in British Columbia is managed by Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) and follows a graduated system designed to help build your skills over time. There are three main stages:

Learner’s License (Class 6L or 8L)
Novice License (Class 6 or 8)
Full Motorcycle License (Class 6)

If you are already a holder of a Class 5 driver’s license, your path will be slightly shorter, but the process is largely the same.

Step 1: Get Your Motorcycle Learner’s License

The first step is passing a knowledge test at an ICBC driver licensing office. This test covers:

Road signs and rules
Safe riding practices
Motorcycle-specific hazards

You’ll also need to pass a vision test. Once successful, you’ll receive a learner’s license (often called an “L”). Fully licensed Class 5 riders can move on to the next step after 14 days (Class 6L). Students with a Class 5L or 5N must wait 30 days before attempting the MST.

Learner Restrictions

As a learner, you need to follow specific rules/guidelines:

  • Display an “L” sign

  • Ride only during daylight hours
  • No Passengers
  • Zero blood alcohol content
  • Zero blood drug concentration
  • No hand-held or hands-free electronics devices
  • No riding on high-speed highways (Speed restricted to 60 km/hr, removed upon passing MST)
  • Qualified Supervisor (restriction removed upon passing MST)

These restrictions are in place so that a new motorist can gain experience in lower-risk conditions.

Step 2: Pass the Motorcycle Skills Test (MST)

Before you are allowed to ride alone, you’ll need to pass the Motorcycle Skills Test (MST). This test is normally done in a controlled parking lot and evaluates your ability to:

Balance and control the bike
Perform tight turns
Brake safely
Avoid obstacles

Many riders choose to take training through a certified school before attempting the MST. Working with a professional instructor can significantly improve your confidence and increase your chances of passing on the first try.

Here at RideWise BC, we offer a comprehensive lesson program that will help you prepare for the MST. You can take a single lesson or our full Motorcycle Training Package.

Step 3: Get Your Novice License

After you successfully pass the MST, you can move to the novice stage. At this point, some restrictions are lifted, but you still need to follow the guidelines that apply to you while gaining real-world riding experience.

You must hold your novice license for a minimum period (24 months for 8N license holders, or 30 days for full Class 6L license holders) before advancing.

Class 8N Restrictions

  • Follow road rules

  • Position yourself safely in traffic

  • React to hazards

  • Demonstrate confident, defensive riding
