Our Driving Instructor Training Course gives you everything you need to become a confident, professional, and highly effective ICBC certified driving instructor. We combine in-depth classroom theory and practical teaching techniques. You’ll learn how to identify individual learning styles and tailor your instruction to meet your student’s needs. By the end of the program, you’ll be ready to deliver high-quality lessons and make a real difference in helping new drivers become safe, responsible, and confident on the road.

Driving Instructor Course Class 5/7 with GLP Practical

Course Content and Hours

The course has both in-class and in-car practical modules as well as homework assignments. The course runs over 14 days from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM (some weekend days may be needed) as well as an additional 6 hours of shadowing and observing actual students being taught. You must complete all the required hours to be successful with the assessment portion of the course.

Defensive Driving Theory

You will learn about the various methods that professional driver instructors use to teach their students. We will cover best practices in defensive driving and introduce you to the comprehensive methods used in the industry.

By graduation day you will be very comfortable and well versed in the concepts that make up defensive driving. This part of the course is perhaps the most important part of your training. By being comfortable with it yourself, you will be able to pass on the concepts of safe driving to your students. You will be encouraged to practice the techniques that you learn each time you get into a vehicle.

Coaching and Instructional Skills

Teaching using positive reinforcement, coaching, feedback, and learner centered instructional style will set you apart from others in the driver education field. Determining individual learning styles or how a person learns best will be outlined for you. We will explore concepts of subconscious driving and habitual learning.

You will become fluent with general terminology and jargon in the driver training industry. There will be some pre-course reading to introduce you to some of the concepts in more depth.

  • Issues in Traffic Safety

  • Rules and Regulations of the Driving Industry

  • The Role of a Driver Educator

  • Professional Communication and Behaviours

  • Learning and Lesson Planning

  • Student Behaviours, Motivation and Learning Curves

  • Up-to-date Teaching and Coaching Skills

  • Selecting Appropriate Instructional Strategies

  • Assessment and Evaluation

  • Safety on the Job

  • Hazard Perception and Management, Risk Awareness

  • Speed, Vision, and Space Management

  • Vehicle Knowledge and Driving Ability, Driving Tasks

Instructor Trainer Course Prerequistes

ICBC Requirements

Before being accepted into an instructor training course, you’ll need a pre-approval letter from ICBC along with the items listed below, all of which are prerequisites.

  • Clean Driving Record with minimum of 3 years experience

  • A current driving record with no more than a specified number of points during the previous 2 years
  • A Medical evaluation with appropriate forms filled out by a doctor (Must be forwarded to ICBC DTU)

  • A Criminal Record Check (with vulnerable sector) completed by your local community police (Must provide original copy to ICBC DTU)

  • Entrance Driving Knowledge and Skills assessment

Instructor Training Course Entrance Assessment Requirements

All applicants for a class 5 driver training instructor license will be required to undergo an assessment of their driving ability and basic knowledge of road signs and traffic laws before starting the facility’s instructor training course. Assessments will be conducted by a class 5 instructor training facility- or the facility can arrange with another facility (or driving school) to conduct them on their behalf. ICBC provides the driving assessment form and knowledge quizzes for conducting the assessments.

Assessments include a 45-minute on-road driving evaluation and a 40-question multiple-choice quiz on road signs and traffic laws.

Potential instructor course applicants must pass both assessments before beginning the instructor training course. There is no limit to how many times a potential instructor course applicant can take an assessment and successful assessments have no expiry date. You will be given your results.
