At DriveWise BC, we’ve always been committed to helping British Columbians become safer, more confident drivers. Now, we’re excited to announce that we’re expanding our offerings to include motorcycle driver training through our affiliated site, RideWise BC. This new program combines the proven teaching philosophy of DriveWise BC with the specialized skills needed to thrive on two wheels.
Why Add Motorcycle Driver Training?
Riding a motorcycle offers a sense of freedom, convenience, and enjoyment that’s unlike any other form of travel. However, it also comes with unique challenges and responsibilities. Our motorcycle training program at RideWise BC ensures that new and experienced riders alike can build the solid foundation, confidence, and road safety awareness necessary to navigate BC’s roads safely and responsibly.
What to Expect from Our Motorcycle Training
Comprehensive Classroom Instruction
Before heading to the training lot, students will benefit from theory-based classroom sessions. Here, you’ll learn about traffic laws, rider responsibilities, hazard perception, and essential defensive riding strategies. This knowledge, closely aligned with the ICBC study materials, sets you up for success both in practice and on the provincial exams.
On-Lot Skill Development
Under the guidance of skilled instructors, you’ll practice critical maneuvers such as smooth acceleration, controlled braking, tight turns, obstacle avoidance, and proper lane positioning. This step-by-step approach ensures you gain confidence handling your motorcycle in a controlled environment before hitting the road.
Gear Selection and Safety Essentials
We emphasize proper gear selection for maximum protection and comfort. You’ll learn how to choose the right helmet, jackets, gloves, and footwear. Understanding the value of protective gear not only improves your safety but also boosts overall riding confidence.
Road Rides with Professional Instructors
Once you’re comfortable on the lot, our instructors will guide you through real-world traffic conditions. You’ll learn how to safely interact with other road users, maintain proper spacing, and effectively respond to common hazards. These supervised road rides help translate theoretical knowledge and basic skills into everyday practical competence.
Preparing for ICBC Exams and Licensing
According to ICBC, prospective motorcyclists need to pass the motorcycle knowledge test and, eventually, skills assessments like the Motorcycle Skills Test (MST) and the Class 6 road test. We integrate key ICBC guidelines into our curriculum, covering:
- Road Signs and Signals: Understanding traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings is crucial.
- Rules of the Road: Students learn right-of-way rules, safe following distances, and lane usage specific to motorcycles.
- Defensive Riding Techniques: Identifying and responding to hazards, adjusting to weather conditions, and maintaining visibility at all times.
With RideWise BC, you’ll have access to practice quizzes and guidance to help you prepare for these knowledge and skills exams, ensuring that you’re well-prepared when test day arrives.
Who Benefits from RideWise BC Training
- New Riders: Beginners gain the foundational skills they need to start riding safely from day one.
- Returning Riders: Those returning after a hiatus can rebuild their confidence and refresh essential skills.
- Experienced Riders: Even seasoned riders can enhance their abilities with advanced techniques and defensive strategies.
Safe Sharing of the Road
The new bike lanes are designed to improve safety and ease of travel for everyone. It’s essential to respect the designated lanes for cyclists and use your driving lanes responsibly. Before making any turn, always check your mirrors and blind spots to ensure it’s safe to proceed.
